Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer was born to a prominent family in Charles County, Maryland. For many years, Jenifer held positions within the Colonial Maryland government. However, as conflict arose between the Colonies and Great Britain, Jenifer began to distance himself from the British backed Colonial government of Maryland and supported the Patriot cause. During the American Revolution, Jenifer was already an elderly man but he helped in ways he could by using his considerable wealth and land to back the American cause. During the American Revolutionary War, Jenifer served in the newly formed Maryland Senate and served as its first President.

In 1787, Jenifer was named as a member of the Constitutional Convention which met in Philadelphia. At the Constitutional Convention, Jenifer represented Maryland and helped to debate, draft and sign the United States Constitution. Like his colleague Benjamin Franklin, Daniel was considered one of the "elder statesmen" for his sage wisdom.

After the Constitutional Convention, Jenifer moved back to Maryland where he died a few years later in 1790 at the age of approximately 66 or 67 years old.

Signers' Garden pays tribute to the Founding Fathers, including those such as Jenifer, who signed the Constitution of the United States.
